Kevin's Post

King Alexander of Macedonia will always be known as Alexander the Great for me. He accomplished so many things for the kingdom. Our kingdom was in northern Greece but his dad King Phillip II captured all of Greece for us, but he died and Alexander the Great took over at age 20, and I never expected a kid this young can rule a empire. He wanted to continue his dad’s dream of conquering Persia. Two years after he became our King he invaded Persia. It all started when we crossed Hellespont, and our great king threw his spear and hit the soil and it stuck. There he declared that whole of Asia would be won by the spear. We meet the Persian Army when we crossed the Granicus River, and our whole cavalry plunged our way through the swiftly flowing river. We beat the Persians in hand-to-hand
combat. We met Darius III for a second time at the mountain pass at Issus. They outnumbered us the narrow battlefield allowed us to win, but Darius III fled again. After thousands of other soldiers and I worked hard during the hot and cold days of war we conquered Persia. It took a couple of years of pain and hard work, but we finally made Darius III flee and Persia was now part of the Macedonia Empire. One of the major battles we fought later in that really tired me was the battle of Jhelum. It was called that because it was in the area around the Jhelum River. We fought a really tough Indian rajah, and he made us face Indian monsoon. We had to face 200 war-trained elephants. The Porus Army had 50,000 troops respectively and they held there ground. That battle made all of us and I so tired, restless, and definitely unwilling to fight elephants again, that when we reached the next river our rebel to go back were so much it forced King Alexander to head back home. Why I really loved King Alexander was how instead of destroying the land he conquered, he made there culture blend. He created the Hellenistic culture consisting of Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian cultures. The main language became Greek and deceptions of man in art and literature revolved around enthusiastic-ness.  Our great king died young, but his legacy that didn’t get forgotten was the Hellenistic he created. His 11 years of hard work and conquered land all got spilt up between some of the powerful people of the kingdom, but the culture mix was always remembered and stayed between the people.

I like to compare George Washington with Alexander the Great. They both were great leaders for their empire or country. Alexander expanded the Macedonian empire to heights never seen before. They won major battles that could have changed the outcome of there country's or empires  success. Alexander won the Battle of Issus and Battle of Gaugamela, and George Washington won the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Trenton. The crossing of the Delaware River was a risky decision Washington, but the surprise attack and win against Hessian troops. When Alexander crossed the Granicus RIver to take over Persia, that was real risky because he might have never came back home alive. The Battle of Granicus River was the first major battle he had against the Persians. Then Siege of Halicarnassus was a great battle that Alexander won, because he was being threatened that he has no navy and the persians do, but he won. Overall they both won independence for there country and expansion for there empire and will always remain as one of histories greats.

  2. Not bad, good facts on all of the battles you talked about, and how the mixing of cultures impacted Macedonia. Also I was fond of you talking about Alexander as a king, leader, and only a young boy, it made him seem real to me which is helpful in a reading like this.
